Adams Morgan Day
September 10, 2007
The second weekend in September can mean only one thing (so I’m told… I didn’t really know otherwise), and that’s Adams Morgan Day.
When I saw this event advertised in the Thursday Washington Post Express, I immediately put it on the calendar. I really love this city and these street festivals bring out the best DC has to offer. It also brings out the crazies. I love these people too. It is really what gives DC it’s flare.
As my friend, Joanna, and I were walking up 18th Street, we saw a crowd of people and heard someone singing. A karaoke bar had brought the karaoke machine outside onto the street. It was probably the most popular area at the festival. When we got there, a woman was singing “Cruisin’” and people were really into it. After that, people really got into it when a guy, in a Redskins jersey got up and sang “Lovers and Friends,” by Usher.
You know you’re serious about karaoke when you bring your own CD to sing. That’s exactly what he did and the dude killed it. It was awesome. He even impersonated Ludacris and Lil’ Jon.
There were a few people dancing to the music but nothing like what happened next. This guy dressed in all red came dancing up through the crowd and started dancing… badly… on the empty sidewalk. All of a sudden, this guy dressed in a hokey police costume enters to stage left and starts dancing as well. I’m not sure if this guy was homeless or just trying to be funny or both but what happened next was pure magic.
The guy in red sees that he is dancing as well and didn’t look like he wanted to be upstaged by this guy so he starts dancing in front of the guy dressed in the police costume. The policeman stopped dancing and just watched the guy in red. When the guy in red was finished, the policeman did his thing and did it well. He then picked up his bag to a few claps and laughs and walked off stage right.
We also got to see an awesome brass band. I think it was new orleans jazz. The harmonies were tight and they played with so much soul. I couldn’t help but dance. It was spectacular. Afterwards I found it was a band from the United House of Prayer which is a block away from my house. I hear them every once in a while when I’m outside. I was really excited to hear that. I really want them to play my birthday party.
I was also encouraged seeing the artists. The photographs were amazing, specially a photo I saw of the Hill of Crosses in Lithuania. I hope to have some of my Uganda photos out there next year.
